Welcome to Paul Nuccio, new chair of the Eaton Conservation Commission, who is now the newest member of CLCA’s AIS patrol. Know that both Steve Kafka and Tim Lohe live on the lake and within the township of Eaton. Paul lives in Eaton proper.
Today (9/12/24) was Paul’s introduction to see and learn about the different zones of So Cove, especially those we are so concerned about (#9,10,11.) He plans to concentrate his attention on these zones. In addition, between this fall and season 2025, we will be training some others from Eaton who have volunteered to participate alongside Paul.
Paul and I ventured to do our first patrol together on a flawless day from the put-in area of So Cove, up the east sides of both Smith and Greely Coves to Boynton Island. We found many of the native aquatic plants he had not known how to identify before;Paul was a quick study and began to “see” the different plants around him, realizing that he had seen many of them when he paddles in Eaton’s other lakes. We found and identified large patches of the different Bladderworts, Native elodea and Native naiads, each of which we pulled up and studied closely. After understanding the importance of looking at plants’ cross sections he was relieved to identify the red stemmed Water marigold as not an invasive milfoil, that the edges of the Native naiads were not serrated and that there were 3 petals (not 4-5) to the Native elodea. What he was really excited about was finding the lovely patches of wispy red Native milfoil in Smith Cove by grids #280 + 281.
