Two Finds in Zone 1

Writer's picture: Don YurewiczDon Yurewicz

I was out for a paddle today in Zone 1 and found two species I had not noticed in this part of the lake before. One is floating bladderwort (I had only seen it in Pennacook Cove previously). The second is a freshwater bryozoan growing on a submerged tree limb. There had been a small bryozoan colony growing adjacent to Rose & Dean's dock in Dolloff Cove several years ago, but this is a new occurrence just outside of Dolloff Cove. Both of these were found in grid 621.

Floating Bladderwort

Fresh Water Bryozoan - bryozoans are filter-feeding colonial animals. The gelatinous colonies are made up of hundreds to thousands of microscopic animals called zooids. They form a firm and slimy base which attaches to anything stationary below the surface of the water.
